Importance of Credit Card Security
We all know how protective we are with our own personal credit cards. We’re very careful about who we give our credit card information to, careful about who over hears us give our credit card numbers for over-the-phone purchases, careful about the level of security for online purchases, etc. With all of the protection we demonstrate to our own credit cards, I’m sure everyone would agree that the same amount of protection should be demonstrated to the cards of our clients. As a service to our AVImark users to assist with protecting credit card information as well as maintain compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI-DSS), AVImark now has the ability to determine if sensitive credit card data is currently being stored within AVImark. Storage of this data in a non-PCI compliant method (whether inside or outside of AVImark) exposes your hospital to an increased chance of fraud. MSS highly recommends that this information be removed and/or protected to meet the PCI-DSS requirements.
During the update process to the AVImark 2009.0 version, a search can now be performed to determine if sensitive credit card data is being stored within the Notes and More Stuff areas of AVImark. If any sensitive data is located during this search, an internal application can be processed to remove as much of this sensitive information as possible from within these areas.
Simply removing this information of course does not ensure your PCI-DSS compliance as these requirements go far beyond the storage of credit card information.
